Dubai, one of seven states that make up the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is in a deep financial crisis. There is a huge $59-billion debt in the financial sector of Dubai World, which is one of the largest global conglomerates, is a major cause for worry, as the region accounts for around 50% of the country’s $25-billion remittances. Dubai World roiled international markets in November when it announced that it would seek a six-month standstill on its debts. The company met in December with 90 creditors in Dubai, but little detail on how the restructuring will work has emerged as talks continue.
The economy is in a bad state as the banks have stopped lending and the stock market has plunged 70%. The economic despair is evident everywhere as luxury hotels are three-quarters empty. Shopkeepers in newly built malls are reporting a substantial drop in sales. Houses and cars are for sale too almost everywhere.
