Katherine Kiviat, born and raised in New York City, is an award winning documentary photographer and photojournalist who has covered diverse subjects, including American Gypsies, Indian sex workers, the first free presidential elections in Afghanistan, the Palestinian elections that brought Hamas to power and the internal refugees from the fighting in Pakistan’s Swat Valley.

In 2007, Kiviat published her first book Women Of Courage: Intimate Stories from Afghanistan with International T.V Journalist, Scott Heidler. For almost three years, she based herself in Kabul, where she taught photojournalism to Afghan women and girls and focused her photography on the changing role of Afghan women.

  • Saira Liaquat, 22yrs, burn victim and survivor, holding an old photograph of herself before she was burned with acid by her husband.  Photographed at Saira's parents' home in Lahore, Pakistan on February 7, 2009.  Saira is presently working as beautician at the Depilex beauty salon in Lahore, Pakistan.  There are presently over 300 cases of burn victims registered in Pakistan.  Most victims are between the ages of 14 - 25 years old.  Motives vary,  but are most frequently obsession, jealousy, suspected infidelity, husband wanting to re-marry, sexual non-cooperation.    The face and genitalia are the areas most generally targeted, those guaranteeing complete disfiguration.
  • Sabira Manzoor, 31 year old burn victim and survivor, in one of the spare bedrooms she  stays in at the Depilex beauty salon in Islamabad, Pakistan on November 17, 2008.  Sabira was burned 15 years ago by her husband who lit her on fire with kerosine oil. After 30 surgeries, Sabira is doing much better and is presently working at the Smile Again beauty salon in Lahore, Pakistan and the Depilex Salon in Islamabad, Pakistan as a beautician.  There are presently over 300 cases of burn victims in Pakistan.  Most victims are between the ages of 14 - 25 years old.   • Bir Baba, (right) with his son  Tarek(left), a Pakistani refugee who fled his village in Bajaur when he received a threat from the Taliban saying they would kill him if he did not leave.  Bir Baba was the Malek, (tribal chief) of his village and is now the leader of a Pakistani refugee community which he set up on the edge of Islamabad, Pakistan.   • Saida, 8 yrs old, from Maiman Agency, is one of the thousands of undocumented refugees who were forced to leave their homes due to intense fighting between the Taliban and the Pakistan military.  She is now living in a housing compound in Islamabad, Pakistan run by refugee, Bir Baba from Bajour who set up these houses for incoming refugees from Bajour, Swat, Buner, and the tribal agency areas.  There are now 70 - 80 familes living on this compound.  The families prefer to rent out these houses as they provide more privacy for their family, in particular, their women who are often filmed and photographed inside the refugee camps.
