Sean Gallagher is a British environmental photojournalist and filmmaker currently based in Beijing, China.

In his early career he trained as a Zoologist, receiving BSc. (Hons) from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK. He received his photographic training as an intern at Magnum Photos London.

After moving to China in 2006, his work has focused on global environmental issues, specifically stories surrounding the climate crisis, with a particular emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region.

He has become a specialist on China having been based in the country for 20 years, has travelled to all of China’s 22 provinces and is able to speak Chinese Mandarin.

In 2023 he was the host of National Geographic Channel’s documentary ‘Road to Carbon Neutrality’, travelling across the country to investigate the nation’s climate goals.

In recent years, his notable environmental projects including ‘Bali - Plastic Paradise’, ‘Cambodia Burning’ and ’Tuvalu - Beneath the Rising Tide’ have received numerous international awards and were featured in news outlets including National Geographic, The Guardian and with CNN. His environmental works have been featured at multiple United Nations Climate Change conferences.

Gallagher was made a Fellow of the UK’s Royal Geographical Society (FRGS) in 2014 in acknowledgment for his work documenting environmental issues
in Asia.

As well as producing photographic and motion work for the world’s leading editorial news outlets, he has worked on commercial campaigns with clients including the United Nations, Intel, Siemens, DHL and BMW.
